"So I'm in a small city in the middle of southern China called Yangshuo and I stumble upon an ENGLISH book shop (this is a huge deal in China because I have not been able to find ANY English books since leaving Hong Kong). They had Atlas Shrugged and I convinced this really socialist Swedish girl that I was talking to earlier to read it! Well she came to Hainan a day after I arrived and she told me that it is the BEST book that she has ever read and she is not even half way yet. She told me that it has been giving her a new way to look at the world, just like I told her it would. I thought that you would enjoy this amost as much as I have!"
Ayn Rand, more so than all of us free market economists today, has a knack for expressing difficult concepts in a way that appeals to the everyday non-economist. Whereas we often concentrate on efficiency, mathematical theories, and confusing econometric modelling, Rand tugs at people's emotions while still analyzing the same policy and social issues. We free market economists need to do more of this if we expect to have a significant impact on society.
