College Football goes to Washington

,
Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a big college football fan. I can spend hours telling you why my 2004 Auburn Tigers were robbed when they were shut out of the national championship game. They went 13-0 and were never ranked above 3 until Oklahoma was embarrassed by Southern Cal. That year, then AU coach, Tommy Tubberville was arguing that a 1 game playoff would be an improvement over the current BCS system. I will be the first one to agree that the BCS system is a hopeless mess. As bad as it is I do not think it should take an act of congress to fix it, but apparently Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee does. Barton is the sponsor of a bill in congress that "would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision game as a national championship unless it results from a playoff. "

Is it just me or does or is the connection between college football and the committee on Energy and Commerce seem less than obvious. Government is intruding into every aspect of our lives. I do not think that Thomas Jefferson or the rest of the framers of the U.S. Constitution envisioned the federal government involved in the economy, banking, the auto industry, and health care the way it has been in the last few years. They certainly did not envision a government that could or should dictate how college football's national champion is crowned. It is bad enough that the federal government is pushing to create universal health care, but leave my college football alone.
