It was announced earlier this month that Southwest airlines will begin flying to Charleston SC. While I have always wanted to live in a city where Southwest flies that is not the exciting or interesting part of the story. Recently the South Carolina general assembly has been working overtime to provide incentives to attract Boeing, create retail establishments, and deals were in the works for Southwest. However, before the general assembly could finish the bill Southwest announced it was coming to Charleston and Greenville. Has this stopped the general assembly? No, they are still working on a deal they so that Southwest will also fly to Columbia, or to attract another low cost carrier. What is interesting is that Southwest has a strong industry reputation and their business model is different from other airlines. "The Wall Street Journal says Southwest generally is regarded as the best-run domestic airline." All of this provides more evidence that if a firm thinks it can locate in an area and be profitable they do not need financial incentives from state governments. What does that say about the firms that do take them?
