What could you do with an additional $8,500 per year?

Robert Murphy details of how much government intervention costs the average American in this article. Through wasteful encouragement to stay in school longer, tax compliance costs, tax and subsidy-induced disincentives, excess military spending, and a host of other spending at all levels of government, Murphy estimates that $2.6 trillion dollars are wasted. That is, that if government were scaled back, $2.6 trillion would be added to GDP. That's a whopping 18% increase in GDP, or $8,500 additional income per person (not per worker, but per person).
